Apprenticeships
We regularly appoint apprentices who enter into a training agreement with Hillside Engineering to attain either the:
- National Certificate in General Engineering Level 4 or
- National Certificate in Heavy Fabrication Engineering Level 4.
An apprentice’s key attributes will include:
- Completion of NCEA Level 1 credits in literacy and numeracy as a minimum;
- Willingness to commit to completing the theory and practical study their National Certificate, some of which must be completed outside of the regular working day;
- A strong focus on safety, quality and timely delivery;
- The ability to be flexible in terms of work hours and shifts;
- Excellent attendance and punctuality record;
- Ability to take instructions and follow through;
- A positive attitude and the desire to develop a career.
- Apprentices are bonded for 2 years (pro-rata) and are required to sign a bond agreement as part of the Employment Agreement.

KiwiRail operates an alcohol and drug free workplace and has developed an alcohol and drug policy and procedures.
Drug and alcohol testing is included in all pre-employment medical examinations. Any offer of employment will be subject to an applicant returning a negative alcohol and drug test.
A full medical will be required for positions deemed as safety critical.
